The California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) administers the Smog Check Program, which helps reduce air pollution by requiring vehicle emissions testing.

The program identifies cars and trucks that produce excess smog and ensures they are either repaired or retired.

Participation is required for many vehicles as part of registration through the California DMV.

Services include:

  • Required emissions testing for eligible vehicles
  • Guidance for repairing vehicles that fail inspection
  • Access to licensed smog check stations
  • Resources for consumers about smog laws and exemptions

Additional notes:

Use the online tool to search for licensed smog check stations by ZIP code or city. Brochures are available in English and Spanish.
